Demographics: Population Growth
Fueled by job growth and quality of life, Sonoma County has continued a modest growth rate, reaching 484,470 residents by 2008. Since 2000, the population has increased by 23,006 residents, or 5.0%. A majority of these residents, 69%, live within the city limits of our nine cities. The City of Santa Rosa has led this growth in total population gain, adding 12,386 residents, or 8.4%, to attain its current population of 159,981.

Between 1990 and 2000, population increased by 70,400 persons, with an average annual growth rate of 1.9%. From 2000 through 2008 population in Sonoma County grew at an average annual rate of 0.6%.

The Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport is located 65 miles north of San Francisco and 50 miles west of the town of Napa. Sonoma County Library
More than half of Sonoma County's residents have library cards. They borrow over 2.5 million items a year. Expert reference librarians answer nearly half a million reference questions annually for individuals, businesses and government agencies. They offer instruction in the use of Library resources in such fields as genealogy, grant writing, and use of the Internet. During a typical school year over 750 classes, more than half the county total, either visit a library or are visited by a children's librarian. The Library operates an adult literacy program, training volunteers to tutor individuals who lack basic reading ability.

Sonoma County Fair
Now the fifth largest Fair in the State of California, the Sonoma County Fair has one of the strongest agricultural programs, and with substantial reserves available for capital improvements. Two large projects currently underway the development of a Turf Track and an improved 9-hole golf course will further cement the solidity of this fairgrounds. When racing starts on July 27, Sonoma County will be the first county fair in the state of California to offer turf racing to its patrons.

Sonoma County Bike Trails
The Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition is a non-profit, membership-based organization created to encourage cycling in Sonoma County. We work with elected officials and government agencies to make sure that all new road projects or redesigns consider the needs of cyclists. We want riders of all ages to have safe and efficient ways of getting around by bike.
